3-day thunderstorms expected across Nigeria. See regional forecasts

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast thunderstorms and widespread rainfall across various parts of the country from Monday, May 27, through Wednesday, May 29, 2025.

In its weather outlook released in Abuja, the agency warned that strong winds may accompany the rains, urging residents to take necessary precautions to avoid weather-related hazards.

Monday Forecast

According to NiMet, thunderstorms are expected in the morning over parts of Taraba, Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, Kebbi, Sokoto, Katsina, Jigawa, and Kano states in the northern region. Later in the day, rains are expected to persist in Taraba, Kaduna, Sokoto, Borno, Kebbi, and Zamfara.

For the north-central region, morning thunderstorms are anticipated over the federal capital territory (FCT), Niger, and Nasarawa. These conditions are expected to extend into the afternoon and evening hours, affecting Plateau, Kwara, Kogi, and Benue states.

In the south, a cloudy morning is forecasted with prospects of rain in Ondo, Ogun, Edo, Ebonyi, Abia, Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom states. Afternoon and evening showers are expected across Oyo, Ekiti, Osun, Lagos, Imo, Enugu, Delta, and Bayelsa.

Tuesday Forecast

NiMet predicts morning thunderstorms over parts of Kano, Zamfara, Katsina, Bauchi, Gombe, Adamawa, Borno, Yobe, and Taraba in the northern region. The agency said these will likely continue into the afternoon and evening in Taraba, Kebbi, Borno, Gombe, Adamawa, Kaduna, Bauchi, and Katsina.

In the north-central region, morning thunderstorms are forecast over the FCT, Niger, and Nasarawa, with later occurrences expected in Kogi, Kwara, and Plateau states.

NiMet said southern states including Ondo, Ogun, Edo, Ebonyi, Abia, Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom are expected to experience morning rain, while later showers will extend to Oyo, Lagos, Enugu, Anambra, Delta, and Bayelsa.

Wednesday Forecast

Morning thunderstorms are predicted over Zamfara, Adamawa, Kaduna, Sokoto, Kebbi, and Taraba in the North, with continued rains expected in Taraba, Katsina, Bauchi, and Adamawa in the afternoon and evening.

The agency said north-central areas such as the FCT, Nasarawa, Niger, and Benue will likely see morning thunderstorms, with further showers in Kwara, Kogi, and Plateau later in the day.

Rainfall is expected in the southern states throughout the day, beginning in the morning across Ogun, Ondo, Oyo, Edo, Enugu, Ebonyi, Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom, and spreading across the entire region by afternoon.

NiMet warned that strong winds may precede the rains in areas where thunderstorms are likely to occur, adding that the public should take adequate precaution.

The agency advised residents to secure loose items, avoid driving during heavy rain, unplug electrical devices, and stay away from tall trees to prevent injury from falling branches.

Airline operators were also urged to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for effective flight planning.
