The Adamawa government has confirmed the death of eight persons following a suspected outbreak of Buruli ulcer in Malabu community, Fufore local government area (LGA) of the state.
Felix Tangwami, the commissioner for health, disclosed this on Tuesday in Yola, the state capital.
He said several other patients are receiving treatment at the Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital, while samples have been sent to the National Reference Laboratory for confirmation.
Tangwami explained that health workers have placed the community under surveillance to curb further spread.
“Our medical team is working round the clock to stabilise the victims’ condition,” he said.

Buruli Ulcer
According to him, the state government is working in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health, the World Health Organisation (WHO), and other partners to contain the situation.
Measures being deployed include emergency response teams, awareness campaigns, and provision of medical supplies.
The commissioner urged residents to remain calm and adhere to preventive measures, stressing the importance of good hygiene practices and early reporting of suspected cases.
He also cautioned against the use of traditional remedies, warning that they could worsen infections.
Buruli ulcer is a debilitating skin disease caused by Mycobacterium ulcerans, known to result in severe ulcers, disabilities, and sometimes death if untreated.
The WHO lists Nigeria as one of the countries with reported cases in recent years.
