Amid high cost of food in Nigeria, floods have reportedly destroyed houses and hectares of farmlands in Buji Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
This was disclosed by the District Head of Gantsa in Buji, Alh. Sabo when a team from National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Jigawa Ministry of Environment, visited some of the villages affected by the flood.
According to him “for about three days now, everywhere was flooded, the water is coming from some parts of Bauchi State, Itasgadau in particular, coming here through the lower valleys.
“All the rice and guinea corn farms flooded as of now, we don’t know the exact estimate of farms and houses that have been destroyed.
“Also in Gantsa town, many houses submerged and the people are now staying with their relatives,” he said.
He urged the Ministry of Environment to construct embankments around the area to prevent further occurrence.
Speaking also, Dr Haruna Mairiga, SEMA’s Executive Secretary in the state, sympathized with the victims.
He said the governor has already directed the agency to conduct damage assessment in order to assist the victims.
