The Lagos state government has set up an ad-hoc pumping station at the Adeniji Adele underbridge to mitigate flooding in Aroloya, Ojo-Giwa, Binuyo, Oroyinyin, and surrounding areas.
Tokunbo Wahab, commissioner for the environment and water resources, disclosed this in a statement released on Thursday by the ministry’s director of public affairs, Kunle Adeshina.
Wahab said the move is a temporary measure aimed at tackling flooding caused by drain blockages resulting from ongoing construction work in the area.
He added that the decision to install the pumping station at Adeniji Adele was strategic to avoid interference with the regeneration works currently taking place on Lagos Island.
“The flooding was caused by a temporary blockage of the drains in the area as a result of the ongoing constructions, which was part of the total regeneration of Lagos island,” he said.
“I urge business owners and residents to be patient with the state government as we work to complete this crucial regeneration project, which will ultimately benefit the community.”
Wahab said the construction will be completed within a short timeframe and urged residents to adhere to waste disposal guidelines.
The commissioner also warned against indiscriminate dumping which exacerbates drainage issues.
He noted that the regeneration project includes the reconstruction of major roads and expansion of drainage infrastructure, all designed to address tidal flooding and improve the area’s resilience to heavy rainfall.
“It should be noted that the state government has approved a total regeneration of Lagos Island; to include improving and expanding the drainage infrastructures,” he said.
“These are primary and secondary channels, constructing pumping stations with smart sensors for flood control. We appeal for the cooperation of the residents and business owners with the contractors.
“However, while efforts are being made to minimise inconveniences, occasional disruptions may occur.
“Everyone must rest assured that the welfare of Lagosians is paramount to the government.”
