The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has urged residents of the state to embrace good environmental habits. He said this during a sensitization campaign earlier this week.
He also urged all residents to take action by prioritizing environmental cleanliness in their daily lives.
The view of the Governor, who expressed dismay at the level of littering of drains as he toured round the streets of Lagos Island, mirrors the view of PlanetPulse.NG.
The sensitization event was about the reintroduction of the monthly environmental sanitation to be held every last Saturday of the month across the state.
The formal announcement of the monthly exercise is set to be made after the sensitization campaign.
All these were included in a statement made available to PlanetPulse.NG from the office of the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources.
“It is high time all residents embraced good environmental habits to avoid any form of disease outbreak in the state,” the statement quoted the Governor.
The statement read in part: “The Governor noted that the awareness/ sensitization campaign will be taken round all the 57 local Government and LCDA every week to ensure that the initiative is embraced by every member of the community while ensuring that Lagosians have access to a clean, safe, flood free and sustainable environment.”
The Minister of Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab was also present at the ocassion, and in his opening remark, he noted that the re- introduction of the Environmental Sanitation Exercise was pertinent in order to promote a clean and healthy environment, as well as encourage community participation in waste management to reduce the risk of disease outbreaks.
He said: “As we all know that the Monthly Environmental Sanitation was a culture in Lagos State some years back as such the awareness of the re- introduction of exercise in the State is going to be another bold step of the present administration.
“All residents are encouraged to imbibe the culture of cleaning their homes, surroundings, drainages in front of their properties and streets.
“The Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) officials would always be on ground to collect bagged waste and dispose them properly,” he added.
Meanwhile, on Sunday 14 July, 2024, the Lagos State government celebrated the Tree-Planting Day on the theme Nurture our Future.
