The Lagos state government has sealed two properties in Osborne Foreshore Estate, Ikoyi, over environmental infractions, including illegal discharge of raw sewage into public drains and obstruction of official duties.
Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, disclosed this in a statement on his official X handle on Monday.
According to Wahab, officials from the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) sealed a building located at No. 2 Kebbi Street in Osborne Foreshore Estate for deliberately releasing untreated wastewater into public drains.
The commissioner said the act is hazardous, thereby causing public nuisance, pollution and endangering human life.
Another location, Mambilla Estate Gate in the same estate, was also sealed for preventing LSWMO officials from accessing the premises to carry out their lawful duties.
Wahab noted that multiple inspection notices had been issued prior to the enforcement, and the obstruction contravened the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017.
He urged residents to adopt safe and proper wastewater management practices to safeguard public health and ensure a cleaner, sustainable environment.
“Every act of environmental nuisance and pollution portends grave dangers to public health and will be met with appropriate sanctions and/or prosecution,” Wahab warned.
