The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with a British company on Sunday, October 20, 2024, to promote plastic waste recycling in Lagos.
During the ceremony at Alausa, Ikeja, the Commissioner highlighted that the initiative aims to significantly reduce plastic waste in Lagos and support its conversion into valuable resources.
Mr. Wahab noted that the British company, known for converting plastic waste into energy, would gain access to the Abule Egba landfill to collect flexible plastic waste for advanced chemical recycling.
This pilot project will be conducted in collaboration with GreenDeal Chemicals and Recycling and Greenback Recycling Technologies Ltd.
These companies specialize in chemical transformation and circular economy solutions and will operate at the decommissioned Abule Egba dumpsite.
The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) will supply plastic waste to the site, which will be processed using four chemical recycling modules.
Each module will require 32 metric tonnes of flexible plastic waste daily, translating to an annual processing capacity of 11,680 metric tonnes.
This effort is expected to prevent 75,920 kg of CO2 emissions and provide jobs for around 1,100 waste pickers in Lagos.
Mr. Wahab also stated that if the pilot proves successful, additional recycling modules will be deployed to scale up plastic waste processing.
Dr. Akintayo Adisa, CEO of GreenDeal Chemicals and Recycling, expressed the company’s commitment to reducing waste, boosting recycling, and supporting Lagos’ vision of a circular economy.
The signing ceremony was attended by Dr. Omobolaji Gaji, Permanent Secretary of the Office of Environmental Services, and Mr. Mahamood Adegbite, Permanent Secretary of the Office of Drainage Services.
