Lagos residents will be free to move around in the early morning of the last Saturday of July as the monthly environmental sanitation exercise will not be holding on that day.
The state government had recently announced its plans to reintroduce the monthly sanitation exercise which it cancelled over eight years ago.
But the government through the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources has begun a sensitization and awareness campaign ahead of the official announcement of the reintroduction of the monthly exercise.
Many had assumed that the awareness campaign meant that the exercise would begin this month, but the government has clarified that it would not.
In a statement made available to PlanetPulse.NG on Wednesday, and signed by Kunle Adeshina, the Director of Public Affairs, the state government reiterated that the monthly exercise was yet to officially kick off.
The statement read in part: “The State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, has urged all residents to disregard the content of the viral fake news and go about their lawful business endeavour.
“There will be no restriction of movements on the last Saturday of July as erroneously included in the fake news.
“Governor Babajide Sanwo- Olu only announced on Sunday during a sanitation sensitisation exercise at Campos playground Lagos island that the state will start a weekly community based sensitisation and awareness exercise that will involve all residents.
“At no time did Mr Governor make a pronouncement that the monthly exercise and restriction will start in July or any other month for now.”
In the statement, the Commissioner urged all residents to imbibe the culture of cleaning their surroundings all the time and not wait until the government declares a particular month for commencement of sanitation or restriction of movement.
