Lagos State Government has taken decisive action against properties built on the drainage channel in Jakande Estate, Oke-Afa, Isolo area.
The Drainage Enforcement and Compliance Department of the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources issued a demolition notice on Monday, May 13, 2024.
Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the notice on Tuesday May 14, 2024, emphasizing its alignment with the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law, 2017.
Letter to Jakande residents
This move, according to the commissioner, reflects the renewed drive of the current administration to ensure the free flow of rainwater and prevent flooding across the state.
He said that the inspection conducted on Monday revealed several contraventions, including the dumping of refuse or waste/toxic substances within the drainage channel, construction of structures blocking the drainage channel, and building houses on the Right-Of-Way of the drainage channel.
The government has now advised affected individuals to dispute the contraventions within 48 hours by providing relevant evidence or Drainage Clearance Certificates.
Failure to dispute or rectify the contraventions within the stipulated timeframe, the commissioner has said, will result in the demolition of the structures.
