Lagos to resume monthly environmental sanitation after 8-year break

The Lagos State Ministry of Environment has confirmed that the Governor of the state, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has approved the reintroduction of monthly environmental sanitation exercise.

The sanitation exercise which usually takes place between 7a.m and 10a.m on the last Saturday of every month had been stopped in 2016.

But in a video posted on social media, the current state Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said the exercise will return.

Wahab said that the State Executive Council had also given its approval for the introduction of the monthly exercise, and would commence in July after the governor officially announces it.

He said (in Yoruba language): “Lagos governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and the state executive council have approved the re-introduction of the monthly sanitation.

“The governor will announce it officially for the exercise to commence this month.”

The reintroduction of the monthly environmental sanitation likely stems from the recent flooding that has impacted major areas of Lagos due to continuous rain.

Last Wednesday, business and commercial activities came to a halt following a 10-hour downpour across many parts of Lagos and Ogun states.

The resultant flooding caused the collapse of a two-storey building in Mushin, halted vehicular movement, and affected thousands of residents, preventing many pupils from attending school in various areas of the states.
