Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources has confiscated truckloads of styrofoam packs after discovering hidden warehouses where the banned items are stored.
PlanetPulse.NG recalls that the Lagos State government had in January placed a ban on styrofoam and othee single-use plastics to curb the plastic waste pollution across the state.
In a social media post by the Commissioner of Environment and Water Resources, the ministry revealed that the hidden warehouses were revealed by whistleblowers.
Apparently, one warehouse was first traced and ransacked on Monday before another one was also visited on Tuesday, with styrofoam packs in their millions seized by operatives of the KAI corps.
The first statement on a Monday post reads: “Following intelligence, the operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps – KAI – were able to trace and make the largest seizure of styrofoam in the state.”
Another statement on the social media handle of the Commissioner reads: “Following a tip off by a whistleblower, Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources discovered another warehouse at No 6 Ogusefunmi Street off Nurudeen Street, Anifowoshe, Ikeja.
“The building is being used for storing the banned styrofoam packs. The operatives of the KAI have confiscated the packs on Tuesday, 24th of September, 2024.”
Styrofoam packs have been banned in the state, and a few other states including Oyo and all MDAs of the Federal Government had also placed a ban on the non-degradable item. Alas, some vendors still illegally use it for business.
