The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has revealed its move to design guidelines and code of ethics for makers and distributors of edible oils.
The move followed an unfortunate incident in Lagos where the agency seized three supposedly petrol tankers which were actually transporting vegetable oil.
Acting on a tip-off, NAFDAC officials stopped the tankers in Apapa, Lagos, late last month. This was stated in a post on Wednesday.
The oil, according to the report on the agency’s social handle, was being transported from an edible oil depot to a processing facility, but the tankers’ previous use for petrol raised concerns about chemical contamination.
NAFDAC said its officials escorted the tankers to a processing facility in Sango-Otta, where the crude soy oil was handed over to the agency’s southwest Zonal office for further investigation.
The edible oil company involved, according to the agency, has already claimed ownership of the trucks and their contents.
But in response to the incident, the statement reads that the Director General of NAFDAC has established a committee to develop guidelines and a code of ethics for the marketing and distribution of edible vegetable oils across the country.
