The Nigerian Government has expressed hopes in having more people become aware of climate change and its impact on the country if radio stations can use their platforms to create awareness.
This was stated by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, who joined in the celebration of World Radio Day on Thursday.
“Through informative and educational programs, Radio, like other critical media, can equip communities with the knowledge and tools to adapt to the changing climate and mitigate its effects,” he was quoted in a signed statement made available to PlanetPulse.NG.
Idris challenged radio stations to collaborate with other organisations and experts in the field of climate change to provide accurate and reliable information to listeners through interviews with scientists, environmentalists, and policymakers to enhance understanding of the issue and work towards finding sustainable solutions.
The Minister said, “The environment community should use this opportunity to reflect on their actions and how they contribute to climate change by adhering to simple changes in their daily habits, such as reducing plastic usage, conserving energy, and promoting sustainable agriculture, in order to make a significant impact in the long run.
“As Nigeria joins the world to celebrate the role of radio in fighting climate change, it is also important for citizens to remember that effects of climate change issues are beyond borders and are felt globally.”
The minister, therefore, appealed to Nigerians to join hands with other nations to find solutions and create a better future for the generations to come.
