The National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA) and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) have committed to enhancing their collaboration to address public concerns regarding genetically modified (GM) foods in Nigeria.

This decision was made during a joint meeting convened by the Minister of State for Health, Dr. Tunji Alausa, on Monday, July 22, 2024. The meeting included the Director-General of NBMA, Dr. Agnes Asagbra, and the Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye.

In a statement released by the Ministry of Health on Monday via X, Dr. Alausa emphasized the importance of consistent communication among government agencies to effectively address safety concerns related to GM foods.

He highlighted the need for a collaborative approach and referenced extensive scientific evidence supporting the safety of GM foods.

Dr. Asagbra confirmed that no GM food permits are issued without NAFDAC’s involvement and reiterated NBMA’s commitment to cooperative efforts that promote food safety.

Prof. Adeyeye clarified NAFDAC’s stance on GM foods, noting that previous remarks had been taken out of context.

She emphasized that thorough scientific research and safety assessments are crucial for approving GM foods and reaffirmed NAFDAC’s dedication to protecting the health of Nigerian consumers.

The meeting resulted in several key resolutions aimed at enhancing collaboration between NBMA and NAFDAC, including the establishment of a Technical Working Group, development of risk assessment and labeling strategies, and joint efforts in capacity building and training.

The statement concluded by inviting the public to note that both agencies remain committed to working together, ensuring that scientific evidence guides their actions as they strive to build public trust in Nigeria’s food safety regulations and safeguard the health of its citizens.
