Nigerian govt begins nationwide campaign on HMPV

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has kicked off a nationwide awareness campaign to educate Nigerians about the human metapneumovirus (HMPV) and promote preventive measures to protect public health.

Although no cases of HMPV have been detected in Nigeria, the campaign aims to preempt potential outbreaks by equipping citizens with crucial information on prevention and safety protocols.

HMPV, a respiratory virus first discovered in the Netherlands in 2001, causes symptoms similar to the common cold and flu, including cough, fever, nasal congestion, and fatigue.

The virus has an incubation period of three to six days and can lead to severe complications like bronchiolitis or pneumonia, especially in children, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions.

Speaking at the launch in Abuja, NOA’s Director of Health and Social Care, Olufemi Ayoola, emphasized the importance of proactive public health education.

“This campaign is a preventive measure, not a reactionary one,” Ayoola said.

“While the virus is not yet in Nigeria, it is crucial to ensure that our citizens are informed and prepared to take necessary precautions.”

He explained that HMPV is primarily transmitted through respiratory droplets from coughing or sneezing and through contact with contaminated surfaces.

Ayoola outlined key preventive measures, including frequent handwashing, wearing nose masks in crowded areas such as airports, and avoiding close contact with individuals showing flu-like symptoms.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has also introduced precautionary measures to monitor the situation and reduce the risk of an outbreak.

“There is currently no specific cure for HMPV,” Ayoola added. “However, adhering to NCDC guidelines and preventive practices can significantly lower the chances of infection.”
