Plant fruit trees across Lagos to fight hunger, Singer tells govt

Lagos should plant fruit trees across the state so that its residents can pluck and eat when they feel hunger, this was an advice from Singer, Seun Kuti.

Kuti’s statement comes at a time when there are lamentations among Nigerians over the high cost of living, which has led to increased hunger in the land.

In an Instagram Live, Kuti recalled that he had enjoyed fruits from trees on the streets while growing up.

He said it would not cost the state government much to bring back the old times, and have fruit trees scattered around Lagos for people to eat at times to quench hunger.

He said: “There are hungry people all over, so why won’t the government plant trees all over Lagos? There’s nothing there, just simple fruit trees.

“Like when we were little, we would pluck fruits from the trees when we were hungry after being out the whole day.

“What would it cost the government to grow trees, mango trees, orange trees, and that African apple tree too. Are we not in Africa? So that people would see something to eat when they’re hungry.

“It won’t cost anyone anything. All they need to do is put the seeds in the ground.

“We’re in Africa; they don’t need to do anything, they will grow. Even in Cotonou [in Benin Republic], there are coconut trees everywhere, but none in Lagos. Why is our own different?”

PlanetPulse.NG recalls that in 2022, the Lagos state government announced plans to plant trees across the state. The same exercise had also been carried out between 2011 and 2015 during the governorship reign of Babatunde Raji Fashola. But perhaps, trees which bear fruits were not part of the plans, as the goal had been mainly to fight environmental pollution and mitigate climate change.
