Preventing Cholera: Simple steps that can save your life

on

Cholera is a preventable water-borne disease spread through contaminated food and water, as highlighted by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

The disease is caused by the ingestion of the Vibrio cholerae bacteria.

While 80% of infected individuals exhibit mild or no symptoms, the remaining 20% experience severe symptoms such as painless watery diarrhea, fever, nausea, and vomiting.

This seasonal and endemic disease predominantly occurs during the rainy season, particularly in densely populated areas with poor sanitation and water supply.

Nigeria frequently experiences cholera outbreaks, with over 1,000 suspected cases recently reported.

From January 1 to June 11, 2024, the NCDC documented cholera cases across 96 LGAs in 30 states, with 10 states accounting for 90% of the cases.

Despite its severity, cholera can be prevented. The NCDC recommends the following preventive measures:

– Use water from reliable sources.
– Boil water before drinking.
– Store water in properly covered containers.
– Ensure bottled water and sachets are properly sealed before consumption.

Additional preventive actions include:

– Purchasing food and beverages from reputable sources.
– Preparing food with clean water.
– Avoiding undercooked foods.
– Maintaining good personal and environmental hygiene.

Early detection and treatment are crucial, but it’s even better to adopt habits that prevent cholera from occurring in the first place.
