The Taraba State House of Assembly has approved the first reading of a bill proposing the establishment of the Taraba State University of Tropical Agriculture and Climate Change Action.

The bill which is sponsored by three lawmakers from Sardauna Local Government Area, seeks to establish a specialized institution that is focused on improving agriculture and climate change action.

The lawmakers are the former Speaker of the House and current member representing Mbamnga Constituency, Abel Peter Diah. Others are Nelson C. Len, representing Nguroje Constituency, and Abdulazeez S. Titong.

According to the sponsors, the proposed university aims to use the region’s vast agricultural potential to promote sustainable development and expand access to educational and economic opportunities for residents.

They also added that the location was chosen due to its favorable climate, fertile soil, and strong capacity to support agricultural innovation.

The approval of the bill’s first reading was met with widespread enthusiasm, particularly in Sardauna LGA, where community leaders and residents have long advocated for improved educational infrastructure.

The sponsors noted that if the bill passes legislative stages and is signed into law, the university is expected to drive agricultural advancement, attract investment, stimulate job creation, and support Taraba State’s efforts to address climate change while enhancing food security.
