Minister of State for Environment, Iziaq Salako, has reiterated that the responsibility of evacuating refuse littered around the country lies with state governments, and not the central government.
The Minister stated this at a joint press conference in celebration of the 2024 World Press Freedom Day at the National Press Centre, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
Salako outlined the federal government’s strategy, stating that it aims to create a national network to facilitate collaboration among states for the circular management of waste.
This initiative, he explained, is part of the government’s response to mounting concerns over environmental degradation and the indiscriminate disposal of refuse.
During the conference themed “A Press For The Planet: Journalism In The Face of Environmental Crisis,” Salako revealed plans to establish a comprehensive National Waste Management Network.
He said the network will provide a platform for states to collaborate and enhance their participation in waste management efforts.
The minister highlighted the environmental and economic benefits of the initiative. By promoting resource efficiency and streamlining waste management processes, participating states can reduce operational costs associated with waste disposal and landfill management.
Additionally, the network will facilitate the sharing of resources, expertise, and best practices among states and local governments, fostering a cohesive approach to waste management nationwide.
Salako also mentioned the recent launch of the National Circular Roadmap, which aims to engage states in domesticating and implementing a framework for recycling previously considered waste.
This roadmap represents a significant step towards a more sustainable future, promoting state engagement in recycling initiatives and addressing the country’s waste management challenges.
